Shoot day and pricing
Your dog’s portrait photography shoot
This is your dog’s chance to shine and, like a human subject, your dog needs to feel relaxed and happy on the shoot day. I will come to you, bring the lights and the background, set up in a space that your dog feels comfortable in and then gently introduce your dog into it ( owners need to be there and armed with treats and toys). I was “dad” for many years to a feisty and adorable little Schipperke called Marlon. A pocket sized guard dog, he could be snappy with people coming into the house - needing to check them out before he gave them his approval and relaxed . So I know how important it is not to rush dogs. I’ll spend at least half an hour just letting your dog have a sniff around me and the equipment so that he or she is not on alert and can get used to me being there.
Once your dog is settled in the photographic space and is being happily distracted by you, I will start to take pictures. I’ve found it’s best to shoot in short bursts, then let your dog go off for a wander and come back when they’d like another treat or a game. Unlike humans dogs don’t know that are being photographed, so we have to patient.
I use a portraiture lens which enables me to stay 6 to 8 feet from the subject. This is less intimidating for your dog, but also means that I will need at least 12 feet to set up the background and to position the camera. The shoot should take around 2 to 3 hours.
What is the process and what does it cost?
I’ll shoot four rolls of medium format black and white film of your dog . My camera produces 6 x 7 images which give 10 shots per roll. Colour film on request. We can do a mix of the two if you would prefer.
It takes about a week for the film to be developed and scanned. I will then send you a link to the scans of the photographs and will highlight my favourites. The final choice or choices are up to you of course. You are also free to use the digital scans for your personal social media channels.
Once you’ve selected a shot that you like I will get a gallery quality print made for you if you would like one. Popular sizes for portraits are:
10 x 8 inches
12 x 10 inches
16 x 12 inches
20 x 16 inches
With medium format, fine art film prints can go up to 40 x 60 inches. These prints are very expensive to produce and I would recommend not going larger than 16 x 20 inches for maximum quality. In a nice frame a 20 x 16 image will produce an impressive piece of art for your wall.
Price:
Shoot up to 3 hours £250.00 including travel up to fifty miles from Brighton. Further travel @ £1.00 per mile
Film, develop and negative scan £45.00 per roll ( I recommend that we shoot 4 rolls to produce 36-40 images)
Once you have chosen your print and print size I will get an ultra high quality scan of the selected negative done and will retouch and send a proof to you for printing
Master retouch and print proof - £75.00 per final selected image
